FAQs
The Electroair Electronic Ignition System (EIS) is an FAA-approved electronic ignition system designed to replace one or both conventional magnetos on many certified aircraft engines. Instead of relying solely on fixed magneto timing, the system electronically controls ignition timing based on engine RPM and manifold pressure (MAP) to provide a high-energy, long duration spark, that is accurately timed to create the combustion event. Complete combustion in the cylinder equals much improved fuel economy and overall engine performance.

Yes, the Electroair system can replace one or both magnetos. Replacing one magneto with an Electroair system generally provides 90% of the total benefit you would expect from eliminating magnetos entirely. This is why many customers elect to replace one magneto with an Electroair system, keeping the conventional magneto as a back-up. However, replacing both magnetos with Electroair systems eliminates the ongoing need for magneto maintenance and reduces the aircraft’s maintenance cost per flight hour. Always refer to the approved installation documentation for your specific aircraft and engine combination.
If you have only one Electroair system installed, the remaining magneto will act as a back-up providing an independent ignition source that does not require aircraft electrical power to operate. In this case, no back-up power system is required. If two Electroair systems are installed, then the back-up battery or alternator has been installed and will come online and operate an Electroair system for a minimum of one hour, allowing the pilot to execute a safe landing. Pilots should follow the procedures and limitations contained in the applicable Electroair and aircraft documentation.
In many installations, easier starting is one of the most noticeable benefits of an Electroair system. Electroair ignitions retards the spark event to zero degrees TDC and provides a high-energy spark during starting, eliminating many of the starting compromises associated with traditional magneto systems and impulse couplings.
Electroair ignitions can improve combustion efficiency, particularly during cruise operation. Depending on the aircraft, engine, altitude, mixture setting, and operating technique, this improved efficiency may allow the pilot to achieve comparable performance while using less fuel. Actual fuel savings will vary by aircraft and operating conditions, but many reports typically suggest a 10-15% fuel savings.
Yes. Unlike a conventional magneto with essentially fixed operating timing, the Electroair system can adjust ignition timing according to engine manifold pressure (MAP). The Electroair system does not advance timing above 24” of MAP. This means at higher-power conditions (higher MAP), appropriate timing helps maintain engine operating margins. As engine load decreases (MAP decreases), additional ignition advance can improve combustion efficiency. The timing strategy is built into the approved system and does not require the pilot to manually adjust ignition timing.
Electroair’s high-energy ignition system can support a wider spark-plug gap than is commonly used with traditional aircraft magnetos. A wider gap provides a larger initial spark exposure to the fuel-air mixture which supports more complete combustion. Spark plugs must always be installed, gapped, inspected, and serviced according to the applicable Electroair instructions. Note: Electroair systems will not perform properly with standard gapped aircraft spark plugs.
Yes, it eliminates the maintenance associated with the magneto that the Electroair system replaces. However, if the aircraft retains a magneto as the second ignition source, that magneto still requires inspection and maintenance according to its manufacturer’s instructions and applicable maintenance requirements. For the Electroair maintenance requirements, please refer to the Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (I.C.A.) found on the Electroair website.
Electroair systems are approved for numerous aircraft and engine combinations, but eligibility depends on the specific aircraft, engine, ignition configuration, and applicable approval. Before purchasing a system, verify your aircraft and engine combination against Electroair’s current eligibility and installation documentation or contact Electroair for assistance.
Does this fit my aircraft?
The answer depends on the specific Electroair installation and approved configuration. Electroair systems use spark plugs with a larger gap than a typical magneto plug. If your existing spark plugs can be re-gapped without causing damage, then the existing aircraft plugs can be used. However, it is easier most of the time to replace the plugs with plugs that are already gapped correctly. Always follow the current Electroair installation and maintenance documentation rather than assuming that an existing plug type or conventional magneto gap is appropriate. And always verify the correct part number spark plug for your engine. Call or email Electroair Tech support with any questions.
When comparing electronic ignition systems, aircraft owners should look beyond simply replacing a magneto. You should consider what your expectations are for this kind of upgrade. Are you looking for performance improvements? Are you looking for better fuel economy? Are you looking for better starting? Are you looking to reduce maintenance costs? If the answer is YES to any of these questions, then the Electroair system is the only electronic aircraft ignition system capable of meeting your expectations.
